Breakdowns are incredibly over-utilized on the 6-song EP, punctuated by clean guitars only when they are gearing up for another breakdown. In late , the band signed to the UNFD record label, which released their first studio album, Discoveries , in November that year.

Recorded virtually live in a couple of nights, their eponymous album was released in "Of course, it had been stripped of its more contentious numbers and the lyric sheet was partly blacked out," says Moni. They found themselves booked to perform at "the premiere showcase for bands in the country", a Johannesburg club called The Chelsea.
He quit and the band fell apart. That should have been that, but as it turned out, Kadey was wrong about National Wake being forgotten: their music had a strange afterlife on bootleg tapes. Around the same time he told his story to the guy from Rodriguez's record label — Light In The Attic is about to release a track National Wake compilation entitled National Wake Walk in Africa — he was approached by film-makers, who wanted to shoot a documentary about punk in Africa.
He was a conscript in the army, fighting across the border in Angola and he was listening to National Wake on his headphones. He's justifiably proud of the music on the Walk in Africa compilation, if a little surprised by the reaction both abroad and back home. Nevertheless a lack of obvious novelty continued to draw critical fire, with an additional charge of pretension now added for referencing Russian artist El Lissitzky on the cover. While acknowledging an "undeniable prettiness" and "soppy bedsit heart", NME fell back on lazy comparisons with New Order. Rival rock weekly Sounds somehow managed to find the album simultaneously "irksome but likeable". The band toured extensively and scored an indie hit with their single "Talk About The Past" which featured Vini Reilly of Durutti Column on piano.
The recording and release of their seminal album Here Comes Everybody marked the apex of their career. In , disillusioned with the lack of proper promotion and indeed apathy from Factory Records, The Wake left the label and signed to Bristol's legendary Sarah Records , releasing two singles and two LPs, the last being 's Tidal Wave of Hype.
By this point, once again down to a three piece featuring McInulty, Allen and Allen, they also shared personnel with another Glasgow-based band on Sarah, The Orchids , with whom they had also played a few live gigs. When Sarah shut down in , The Wake effectively dissolved.
